The life lesson that cost $3.50

This shirt may have cost us $3.50, but the lesson our kids learned is priceless. Last spring Colby had field and track day here in Colorado Springs, CO. The night before we needed to run and get a shirt for him to decorate. I’ll admit, I was really enjoying sitting on the couch catching up on our favorite shows. But we needed to get the shirt so I grabbed him and Courtney and we headed to Walmart to get the shirt. We pick out the shirt and Colby throws it over his shoulder. We are walking around getting some groceries and items to help decorate the shirt. We go and check out at the register, everything is grand! I am so excited that we are going to be heading home and I can relax after a crazy day! We pull into the garage and everybody gets out of the car. I go to the passengers side sliding door to get the supplies we had bought. Colby jumps out of the car and I look on his shoulder…. there resting on his shoulder.. is the shirt…. I panic and then look at him and ask him if we had paid for that shirt and he didn’t know. I grab the receipt out of the bag and sure enough, it wasn’t on the receipt!! UGH!!! We walk inside the house and I tell Matt what we did. I knew what I needed to do, but that couch looked so comfortable….. It was only a $3.50 shirt, right? Well, I look at Courtney and Colby and we hop back in the car to go back to Walmart! UGH! By this point, Colby is in a complete panic asking me if he was going to get arrested, if I was going to get arrested. He is absolutely beside himself. We walk in and he is looking around everywhere to see who is coming to take us to jail. We walk up to the register and pay, nobody says a thing. We walk out and he is finally breathing again!!

As easy as it would have been to just let it go, I knew I had to set a example for the kids. Plus I knew the guilt of not paying for it would have had me up all night. Accident or not, it needed to be done. We needed to take responsibility for what we had done!

One of my favorite quotes is about Integrity, “Integrity is doing the right thing when no one else is watching.”
